The Olympic Museum in Wellington has a new display exhibition featuring New Zealand New Zealand skeleton racer Ben Sandford. Sandfords helmet, specialist competition shoes with ice spikes, specialist suit and gloves are on display until the end of this year. Sandford, Olympian #991, says competing in the Torino and Vancouver Olympic Winter Games has been one of the highlights of his career. Being able to compete at the Olympic Games is the ultimate achievement in our sport; it is the one race every four years which means more and matters more than the rest. Skeleton racing involves individuals lying face down on a sled and racing down a frozen track, with athletes experiencing up to 5 Gs. Sandfords specialist gear is still in use by the daredevil Olympian and will be returned to him at the close of 2011 as he heads into another season of international competition.
