Today marks exactly 500 days to go until the London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony on July 27, 2012

More than 10,000 athletes from 205 countries will gather together next year in a spirit of excellence, friendship and respect. Television audiences are expected to top five billion as one of the worlds most compelling events gets underway.

In the Olympic host city the official countdown clock was unveiled in Trafalgar Square which will kick off celebrations throughout London today.

In New Zealand, plans are well underway to launch an exciting Olympic campaign on April 28th and athlete selections kick off in November.

Around 200 New Zealand athletes making us proud at the 2012 Olympic Games and more than 100,000 Kiwis will be in London to cheer them on.

London is already well on track to be ready in time for the games with a number of venues including the Velodrome which was first Olympic Park venue to finish construction, on time and to budget. The Olympic Park big build is now nearly 80 per cent complete and the main venues remain on track to be completed a year before the Games. At the start of March work began on the BMX Circuit which marked the next stage in delivering world-class cycling facilities for the Games and beyond.  Other venues completed include Weymouth/Portsmouth sailing venue, the rowing venue at Eton Durney and the purpose-built Lee Valley White Water Centre which will host Canoe Slalom already complete.
