Last weekend I was lucky enough to be part of the ITU Auckland World Cup Triathlon in downtown Auckland's CBD.
The event itself was one of the best I have ever done. Being at an advantage with a home crowd, the atmosphere out on the course and before the swim start was absolutely amazing. The crowd 3-4 deep around the whole course was just great to see and I thank the organisers and the spectators for coming out to watch as it truly does make the race even better!
Looking at the race, it wasn't one of my best performances however this late in the season it was always going to be a struggle to get back up to my top shape. I didn't have a great swim which left me fighting for the first 3 laps of the bike to get into the 2nd bike pack which I eventually managed to do. From here on I wasn't feeling to great so I waited for the run and managed to pull my way through to 8th place which overall was a great way to finish my 2011 season. The race was won by a kiwi, Kris Gemmell, nobody was more worthy of a win after a season of much disappointment, he proved that in 2012 for the World Series Final you are going to have to be super super strong on a very demanding course.
From here I have a break which the body is currently loving, and then its back into some serious base miles to get myself back into tip top shape ready to seal up that Olympic Games spot in April.
