It’s finally here! 2012 has been on the radar for so long now it’s almost a relief we can finally start talking in the present – rather than constantly waiting, waiting for the calander to tick over.
In saying that, we have been following a specific Olympic training plan since May last year and we have everything mapped out between now and race day at the London Olympics.
While London Olympics is the big goal of 2012 we also have several mini-goals to strive for throughout the year.
The year kicked off with the National Time Trial Champs in Christchurch where it was exciting to have our Teams Pursuit team fill the podium. Lauren Ellis had a fantastic ride to claim the national jersey, Jaime Neilson was second and I finished up just 2sec back in 3rd.
We have now been down in Invercargill knocking out some hard laps on the velodrome and putting in a solid training block. During this time the other half of our squad have been racing over in Beijing, China at the 3rd World Cup of the season gathering Olympic points and finishing a credible fourth.
Next on the schedule for me is the London World Cup where I will get the opportunity to race the Teams Pursuit (Olympic Event) as well as the Individual Pursuit (World Champs Event). This is going to be a massive event with it being the only chance for countries and athletes to test out and experience the actual London track before the Olympics. Super EXCITING!!!
We then have our World Championships from 4th – 8th April, very close to home in Melbourne. This again will be a big event as it will be the last real track race we will have before the Olympics. The best thing about the World Champs is they are just across the ditch and already we have heaps of family friends making the trip across to support us. It is the closest thing we will get to a home World Championships and it will be very special to race with all that vocal support in the crowd.
So for now, its back to the daily training program. Focusing on getting the best out of each training session. We know what we do today and tomorrow will eventually all add together to create our perfect big picture come race day in August.
Bring it on 2012!
