Paora was NBL Rookie of the Year in 1996, attended the 1997 world U23 championships and debuted for New Zealand in 2002 after missing several seasons on a Mormon mission. Paora was included in the 2002 World Championships roster when centre Tony Rampton withdrew injured.

Paora played with the NZ Breakers during their debut season and was selected for the 2004 Athens Olympics. He was again selected and went on to be part of the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games basketball team achieving a silver medal for New Zealand.
