In 2013 Helena won the silver medal for the 200m butterfly at the New Zealand Open Championships, which she repeated in 2014 and added a silver medal in the 400m individual medley. A year later she won a silver and a bronze medal the 2014 Oceania Championships.
During 2015 Helena won four national titles and represented New Zealand at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea.
At the 2016 New Zealand Open Championships, Helena broke the New Zealand record in the 100m butterfly with a time of 58.51, which qualified her for the Rio Olympic Games. She also won the 400m individual medley and 50m butterfly and broke the NZ Record in 2:09:84 for the 200m butterfly.
At the 2016 Oceania Championships Helena won gold in the 50m and 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 4x200m women's freestyle relay and 4x100m women's medley relay, 4x100m mixed medley relay as well as silver in the 200m butterfly and the women's 4x100m freestyle relay.
Helena made her Olympic debut in Rio recording 59.82 to be 33rd in the 100m butterfly and 2:12.18 to be 25th in the 200m butterfly. In 2017 Helena won the national title in the 50m and 100m butterfly and the 200m and 400m individual medley. She also qualified for the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest.
