Dodds became a competitive triathlete in 2005 and quickly made his way to the top of the sport in New Zealand, securing the title of New Zealand U23 Champion three times and winning the New Zealand Sprint Championships in both 2010 and 2011, as well as achieving a number of top placing's on the world stage.

Dodds represented New Zealand at the Olympic Games at Rio in 2016 where he finished 21st out of 56. He also represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow in 2014 where he placed 10th out of 45 in the Olympic Distance Triathlon and 5th out of 9 in the Mixed Team Relay.
