Born in Christchurch, Sam O'Connor was a member of the Oxford University crew that won The Boat Race in 2015 over arch-rivals Cambridge after finishing his degree and rowing at Harvard.  Sam together with his brother James are the first New Zealand siblings to win the race in the same crew, while Sam, winning the event for a third consecutive year. The brothers are understood to be two of 13 New Zealanders to compete in The Boat Race.

Sam claimed a World Championship title for rowing in 2006. Sam was part of the New Zealand team that competed in the 2007 Australian Youth Festival in rowing.
