Glasgow 2014 was the third Commonwealth Games for Richard after he represented New Zealand at the 2006 Games in Melbourne and the 2010 Games in Delhi - making him one of the most experienced players of the team. Richard plays in the Pairs and Fours disciplines. He took up the sport at the age of 14 with encouragement from his parents. Richard states that playing with his father and winning the Okahu Bay Club Pairs together in 1998 remains the highlight of his career.
