Rio 2016 was Kayla's first Olympic Games.

Kayla was part of the silver medal winning eight that qualified the boat for Rio at the 2015 World Rowing Championships. Kayla was born in Auckland and represents the Auckland Rowing Club where she started rowing with Epsom Rowing Club in 2006.

Kayla rowed in the pair with Rebecca Scown in 2013 winning bronze at the World Championships. She was also part of the New Zealand women's four that won gold and set a world best time at the 2014 World Rowing Championships.
