John (known as Jack) Tynan captained the New Zealand men's hockey team at the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games where they finished in sixth place.

Jack represented Wellington and New Zealand in hockey, captaining the national team in 1948, 1950, 1952, 1954-56. He was an all-round sportsman and also played four first-class cricket matches for Wellington between 1952-1954.
