Glasgow 2014 was the first Commonwealth Games for David, where he won bronze in the floor exercise and the first medal for NZ's male gymnasts in 16 years. The bronze was a surprise for many, the 24-year-old qualifying 7th of eight qualifiers to make it through to the final. But David gave a strong performance out on the floor, resulting in a 14.550 score. When the other gymnasts began to falter and make mistakes, it become clear that David would be earning a spot on the podium and a place in artistic gymnastics history in New Zealand.

He competed at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, and the 2012 World Cup in Anadia, Spain where he placed 12th in the floor exercise and 13th in the high bar apparatus.
