Colin Johnstone represented New Zealand in rowing at the Auckland 1950 British Empire Games where he was a member of the team that won the gold medal in the men's coxed four. Colin's team mates in Auckland 1950 were John O'Brien, Ted Johnston, Bill James and Bill Carroll.

Colin also represented New Zealand in the Helsinki 1952 and Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games in the same event. The men's coxed four placed fourth in the semi-final in Melbourne.
