Ross Tong won a bronze medal with the New Zealand coxed four at the Los Angeles Olympics.

He was a member of the powerhouse Waikato Rowing Club of the 1980s. He won a national eights title in 1984, fours titles in 1984 and 85, coxless fours in 1985, and a coxless pairs title in 1985.

Tong, a former policeman, has coached rowing at Auckland's King's College. He has also won national titles as a coach, working with Brett Hollister to prepare rowers from Waikato Rowing Club.
