nzoc wins award at international festival

The New Zealand Olympic Committee has won the International Olympic Museum’s Award for Olympic Spirit at the 23rd International Festival for Sports Movies and Television in Milan, Italy, for the documentary ONE TEAM ONE SPIRIT.

Selected as one of the 196 finalists at the Festival from over 900 entries worldwide, ONE TEAM ONE SPIRIT was included in the Olympic Games/Olympic Spirit section of the Festival.  The Festival has the recognition and support of the IOC.

The 46 minute documentary was produced and directed by the NZOC’s Communications Manager, Gordon Irving, and tells the story of the New Zealand Team at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.  It is the story of Olympism in action, the story of a team committed to creating an environment that empowered and supported one another, that was enjoyable to be part of and that gave meaning to what it is to be a New Zealander.

Producer and director Gordon Irving said it was a great honour to receive the award.

“This is my first television documentary and to be recognized by an international jury at such a prestigious festival is quite amazing.”

“I am proud to win the International Olympic Museum’s Award for Olympic Spirit as this was the essence of the documentary from its inception.  This was always more than a sports story, but instead a story of human endeavour and how understanding, meaning and enjoyment can help bring the very best out of people.”

“This award is dedicated to every member of the New Zealand Olympic Team in Athens.”

ONE TEAM ONE SPIRIT was made with assistance from Olympic Solidarity.
